By Stableton on August 5th, 2026

Checks cleared and deals closed across private tech this week. Also in this issue: Morgan Stanley enters advanced talks on a $15B loan for a Google-backstopped Anthropic campus, SpaceX nears a deal for 130,000 acres of Louisiana marshland, and Bending Spoons picks up Airtable at a $1.28B enterprise value. Let's dive in…

THIS WEEK’S BREAKING NEWS

Amazon locks in 5% of OpenAI for $50 billion

Amazon completed its $50 billion investment in OpenAI and holds a roughly 5% stake in the $852 billion ChatGPT maker, which is expected to go public next year. Of that, $35 billion was contingent on an IPO or an AI breakthrough, yet Amazon paid it even though neither happened. It has also committed up to $33 billion to rival Anthropic, so it backs both leading AI labs. (1)

The private unicorn market continues to expand in scale and value

The unicorn market is getting bigger and smaller at the same time.

The number of active unicorns has climbed steadily since 2016, but their combined valuation has grown even faster, expanding roughly ninefold over the same period as private companies keep raising and staying private longer.

Look closer at that growth and a second pattern emerges: the top 10 unicorns account for a large and growing share of the total. The broader unicorn universe keeps expanding, but a small group of category leaders is where most of the value creation, liquidity, and institutional attention now concentrates.

The Stableton Morningstar PitchBook Unicorn 20 strategy is built around exactly this dynamic, concentrated in the most valuable private blue-chip technology companies driving growth across the broader private market.

THE UNTOLD UNICORN STORY

Perplexity AI: Turning search into reasoning

Co-founder and CEO of Perplexity AI, Aravind Srinivas.

Canva began in a living room in Perth, Australia, where 19-year-old Melanie Perkins and her boyfriend Cliff Obrecht launched Fusion Books, a drag-and-drop yearbook design tool for schools. Perkins had been teaching students graphic design and grew frustrated watching them struggle with complex software like Photoshop and InDesign. The yearbook business proved their concept worked, but when they tried to pitch a broader design platform to Silicon Valley investors, they were rejected over 100 times across three years. (41)

In just a few years, Perplexity has become one of the biggest challengers in AI-driven search, expanding into browser integrations and enterprise features while attracting backing from leading technology investors. By combining large language models with transparent attribution, Perplexity introduced a more direct and synthesis-driven way to interact with information. (42)

Fun Fact: The name Perplexity comes from a core metric in natural language processing. In AI research, “perplexity” measures how well a language model predicts the next word in a sequence. The lower the perplexity, the better the model understands language. (43)
